What I've worked on

I have held leadership roles covering the most far-reaching stories, including the Sandy Hook Elementary School massacre, funerals for Princess Diana and Chinese leader Deng Xiaoping, the terror attacks of September 11, national political conventions, World Cups, Olympic Games and the Rwanda genocide, which was awarded the Feature Photography Pulitzer Prize in 1995 for an Associated Press staff entry.

I was with AP Photos from 1990 until the end of 2003. From 1991 to 2002, AP Photos received nine Pulitzer Prizes in Photography. As deputy executive photo editor, I was responsible for all editorial aspects of the U.S. and international photo operation, which included more than 400 staff photographers and editors.

In 2002, I received a Fulbright to work with Rwandan journalists in visual journalism that led to my involvement to establish a media training center for working journalists in Kigali. I formed a journalism education nonprofit to assist the Great Lakes Media Center, which launched in 2008.

That year, I joined the public-trust news organization, The Day in New London, Connecticut, as the managing editor for online and photography. The Eppy Awards recognized theday.com as a finalist for three consecutive years, 2011 to 2013, for best use of photography on a news site.

I worked at the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette from October 2016 until April 2019, first as the assistant managing editor for Visuals and then as managing editor. The staff of the Post-Gazette won the 2019 Pulitzer Prize for Breaking News Reporting for its coverage of the Tree of Life synagogue shooting rampage.

I developed a photojournalism workshop emphasizing “the value of the moment” and have organized workshops for documentary photographers in Medellin, Colombia, in 2003; Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic in 2004; Almaty, Kazakhstan and Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan in 2007 and La Paz, Bolivia in March 2015.

I have served as a juror and nominator in photography competitions, including World Press Photo, Pictures of the Year, the International Center of Photography Infinity Awards and Alexia Foundation and have served as a mentor at The Eddie Adams Workshops.
